Anthony Bay has more than 25 years of experience as a technology executive, entrepreneur, and private venture investor. Since April 2005, Mr. Bay has been a co-founder and Chairman of MOD Systems, a privately held technology company which has raised over $40 million of financing from investors including Toshiba Corporation and NCR Corporation. From 2000 to 2006, he served on the Board of Directors of Loudeye Corporation, including the role of Chairman of the Board from 2003 to 2006. Loudeye was listed on NASDAQ until acquired by Nokia Corporation in October 2006. Mr. Bay was Chairman of Active24, a European web hosting company based in Norway, from 2002-2005. Mr. Bay helped lead the company’s listing on the Oslo exchange and several acquisitions. From 1994 to 2000, Mr. Bay worked for Microsoft Corporation, last serving as Vice President and General Manager of Microsoft’s Digital Media Division and a member of Microsoft’s executive staff. Mr. Bay previously worked 8 years for Apple Computer, including 3 years in Paris. Mr. Bay is an independent director of ModusLink Global Solutions, one of the world’s largest supply chain management companies, and a NASDAQ listed company. Mr. Bay chairs the Investment Committee of @Ventures whose 5th Fund exclusively invests in Clean Tech companies since 2004. Mr. Bay received a BA from UCLA and an MBA from San Jose State in California. He also studied at INSEAD in Paris, France and at Georg-August Universitaet in Goettingen, Germany.
Evan Smith led the advanced biofuel initiatives of Imperium Renewables, the operator of North America’s largest biodiesel refinery. In this role he built partnerships in the advanced biofuel community and models for joint development and commercialization across the supply chain. Mr. Smith served as a special contractor to Boeing to help develop the company’s knowledgebase and strategy for commercializing aviation biofuels. Mr. Smith spent two years studying the advanced biofuel feedstock Jatropha curcas, including extended research trips in India as a Leitner Fellow. Mr. Smith is a member of the Steering Board of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Economics from Yale University.
William Savoy served under various titles as the leader of Vulcan Inc., Paul Allen’s asset management organization, and its predecessor companies, from 1988 to September 2003. Most recently he was the President of the portfolio and asset management division of Vulcan Inc., managing Vulcan’s commercial real estate, hedge fund, treasury and other financial activities, and served as the President of both Vulcan Northwest and Vulcan Ventures. During that period Vulcan’s assets grew from US$500 million to US$23 billion. He serves as a director for Drugstore.com, and BSquare Corp. From June 1989 until its sale in June 1990, Mr. Savoy was the president and chief executive officer of software company Layered, Inc., and was its chief financial officer from August 1988 to June 1989. He received a B.S. in computer science, accounting and finance from Atlantic Union College, South Lancaster, Mass.
Phil Hopton worked for Rolls Royce plc from 1973 until 2008. From 2003 until 2008 Mr. Hopton served as the Senior Vice President of Boeing operations, with full responsibility for Rolls Royce’s Boeing account, including relations with Boeing executive management. From 2001 to 2003 he was the Managing Director of Rolls Royce Turbine Systems, in charge of 2,200 employees and a budget in excess of US$800 million. From 1999 to 2001 he was the Director of Boeing Programs, reporting to the Managing Director of Civil Business. In this role, Mr. Hopton had full P&L accountability for the engine programs supporting the Boeing 757, 767, 747, and 777 aircraft. From 1991 to 1998, Mr. Hopton served first as Chief Engineer and then Director of the Trent 800 engine–Rolls Royce’s engine program for the Boeing 777–which achieved the best entry into service reliability statistics of any new engine program in the first year of service. He has served as Chief Engineer of the RB211-535E4, Chief Development Engineer of the V2500, and a variety of other engineering capacities through his early years at Rolls Royce. Mr. Hopton has worked closely with both Airbus and Boeing. He is a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and the 1992 recipient of the Royal Academy of Engineering ‘McRobert Award.’
